Seven Week Layoffs, We Hardly Knew You

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany thinks you can do a lot with 50 days. It could be enough time to form a blue-ribbon task force to discuss the addition of another team. It might be enough time to try and convince the tournament selection committee that the league deserves more than four teams in March. But as we learned back in January, 50 days might be too much time to prepare for BCS bowl games, just ask Delany.

"We had two very disappointing bowl outcomes, and the huge time lag was a factor in the public’s mind and some coaches’ minds," Delany said. "Since everybody was talking about it, we felt we should discuss it. We at least want to inspect it (the possibility of moving back the season)."

If the conference significantly alters its schedule, off-campus students will be rioting and burning couches after Thanksgiving as opposed to before it. So adjust your schedules accordingly. Continue Entry»

Big Game Brady Headed to Cleveland?

CLEVELAND, OHIO - According to our friends at ESPN's NFL Live, Brady Quinn would be the draft pick that makes the most sense for the Browns this offseason, especially because he's someone the fans can get excited about (Personally, I get more excited about Laura Quinn, and apparently so does A.J. Hawk). These football gurus also provided some insanely useful information about the Browns that we didn't already know like: We can't run the ball or stop the run, Romeo Crennel is on the hot seat, and we might not be set on Qb Charlie Frye (They really did their research to compile these facts). The most interesting thing about the segment on the Brownies was that Mark Schlereth mentioned that Scott Peoli, the GM for New England, could end up in Cleveland if the Browns underachieve because of his Cleveland roots (They also said this would be the only team that Peoli would leave New England for). I guess this means that Phil Savage better go out and make some changes this offseason, including making the right decisions in the draft. ESPN also reported that the Browns are high on JaMarcus Russell because he has worked Savage's QB camps over the last couple of years, clearly a big deciding factor in drafting a franchise quarterback.

"I'm Still Fat...So I'll Sue the Doctors!"

FAT CAMP - According to this story, Notre Dame's portly, overrated coach is suing for malpractice after complications with a gastric bypass surgery that he had in June of '02. The man that is the proud owner of the most pronounced "FUPA" in sports slipped into a coma that threatened his life for nearly two weeks (Thankfully he lived, and now we don't have to worry about Notre Dame ever winning a game that they're not supposed to win as long as he is holding the reigns). Weis and his attorney are contending that he still suffers leg injuries today as a result of the internal bleeding that took place, and are seeking restitution for this matter (Personally, I think his legs are simply struggling to hold up the rest of his body). An attorney for the doctors in this case was quoted as saying "There was no malpractice...This man is simply fat, and no surgery is going to resurrect the years of saturated fat punishment that his body has taken. Perhaps he should try eating less, working out and putting together better defensive gameplans."

An Online Petition Not Involving Ron Zook

CLEVELAND - Known for their considerable rate of success, online petitions have become almost as commonplace on the world wide web as sports blogs dwelling on the misfortune of Cleveland sports teams (examples 1, 2, 3). It seems that some Browns fans have created DraftTroy.com, with one unequivocal goal in mind - but you'll have to do your own research to figure that out. Bush Losing Heisman?

SAN DIEGO, CA - Yahoo News, known more for its widely-respected porn gathering services, is actually doing some reporting. They must really have a thing for Reggie Bush...He's been the target of an eight-month investigation alleging, believe it or not, that the talented football player received benefits. Serious stuff for USC, which could receive NCAA sanctions. Although, the Trojans could probably lose every scholarship, lose every game, hire John L. Bucks 20th in First Preseason Poll

Faster than you can say "SEC Speed," the fine people at CBS Sportsline have compiled their first set of rankings for the 06-07 college football season. USC, a virtual fixture at the top of the polls is once again ranked above the Buckeyes. You do realize I'm talking about the University of South Carolina don't you? - ranked three spots ahead of OSU. Fresh off the national title game and the subsequent conference-wide fawning, all twelve SEC teams teams somehow managed to find themselves in the top ten. You figure it out. Continue Entry»

Buckeyes Receive 2007 Crown

COLUMBUS - Sure the Florida Gators doused the Buckeyes last Monday in Glendale in what was an embarrassment of a national championship game, but Jim Tressel once again gets the last laugh, as he bested Urban Meyer and the SEC in the coveted Devold football poll released today. Few could rationally argue the merits of the poll, which has been around since 1945, and uses "a hand calculator," to formulate its rankings. Maybe this will silence Tressel's critics, who obsessed about his gameplanning and playcalling in route to the 42-14 loss. In the end, the sweatervest apparently did just enough to win the title. Ginn Gone

COLUMBUS - According to an ESPN report, Ted Ginn will limp forward to the NFL and bypass his senior season with OSU. During the past week, the junior was believed to be waffling on his status after the Debacle in the Desert. Reports are that immediately following his decision, motions were filed in a local Columbus court to prevent Roy Hall from coming within an endzone of the speedy receiver. Continue Entry»
